March 2023

This month 103 households from Buena Vista, Lexington, and Rockbridge commenced our 2023 Backyard Compost Challenge – a record. The group includes 22 families who enjoyed the project so much last year they signed up again. Almost everyone else is new to composting. Once again we had a waitlist. This is one excited group – check out some of the reasons folks gave for participating in this 10-week data collection study.

What are participants looking forward to the most about this 2023 Backyard Composting project? As part of a project survey we asked and they answered! Here’s a sampler:

  • Garden compost of course! But I’m also a grown-up science nerd and having a project makes me happy.
  • Learning more about how recycling our food waste can improve our garden soil while at the same time help to slow climate change and decrease waste in our landfills.
  • Seeing everyone’s data and being part of a super cool project.
  • Helping Mother Earth as a family and gardening with homemade compost.
  • Doing something as a family to make the world a better place.
  • My son and I doing it together. Him feeling like he took part in something big and that it matters.
  • Reducing my food waste, participating in bettering the Lexington community, and learning something new.
  • Possibly starting a ball rolling at Kendal to have more “neighborhood” shared composting.
