Feed the birds

After a year’s hiatus due to covid and supply issues, organizer Bonnie Bernstein is glad the annual sale is back on.

“If you feed birds through the winter, this is your chance to stock up on premium seed and suet. We hope those of you who had been ordering the bulk of your seed from our fundraiser will plan to do it again this year – it’s a great way to support both the birds and Boxerwood!”

This year, the Rockbridge Bird Club is excited to be purchasing freshly harvested black oil sunflower seed directly from a local Rockingham farmer. Additional seed and backyard bird feeding products will come from Lizzie Mae’s Birdseed, an Amish family-owned supplier in Ohio.

In addition to black-oil sunflower, the seed sale includes nyjer and several crafted blends. Suet cakes will be sold by the dozen. And if you need another feeder to hold seed for all the birds you’re going to attract to your yard, this year’s offerings include a Squirrel Buster model.

Product previews and prices are available now, and the online ordering goes live on Monday, October 17.

You can also fill out this form and mail a check to Boxerwood, but your form must be received no later than Monday, October 31.

The Bird Club also encourages people who feed birds to participate in Project FeederWatch, a winter-long survey of birds that visit feeders throughout North America.

The program is run by Cornell Lab of Ornithology and Bird Studies Canada and is open to all. Participants count birds they see at their feeders, then upload their counts on the FeederWatch website, where scientists use them to track long-term trends in bird populations.
