If you love nature and care about protecting the environment, then make a difference by joining the Boxerwood community of volunteers! Share your time, talent, and energy volunteering in our enchanting woodland setting. Help expand our impact in the community and further our mission to educate and inspire people of all ages to become environmentally responsible stewards of the Earth.
Volunteers complete an application, background check, and orientation before training with professional staff and/or experienced volunteers.
Below are some of our volunteer opportunities (some activities, but not all, require physical dexterity):
Welcome visitors (morning or afternoon) on busy weekends, share Boxerwood history, enlist new members, monitor PlayTrail use. On occasion, lead tours. Special training is provided to ensure you are familiar with highlights of the garden and Boxerwood history, including anecdotes about the physical features and the art nestled among the vegetation. Regular commitment requested.
Help our public events run smoothly. Help plan events, set up/clean up, park cars, enlist members, collect donations, or assist with group activities. Regular events include our summer Music in the Garden series, fall Pumpkin Walk, and winter workshops. One time help often needed.
Assist with mailings, stuffing envelopes, putting up posters, marketing and publicity, and other office tasks. On occasion, help answer phones and provide office coverage.
The Play Trail
This extraordinary community gem is a well-known and often-visited place for children to use their imaginations and discover the joy of exploring the natural world. The Trail needs regular maintenance, particularly on weekends. Work with our PlayTrail Stewards Team.
Experienced and beginner gardeners share and sharpen skills and learn new techniques working among our extraordinary trees, shrubs, and native gems. Volunteers remove invasive plants, provide garden maintenance, plant native species, weed, and maintain paths and wildlife habitat. A few different weekly opportunities exist to work in the garden seasonally, including work with local gardening chapters.
We occasionally need help with facility needs and construction. Join our on-call warrior team who help as projects arise.
Become an instructor or chaperone for our nature-based, hands-on educational programs that spark the curiosity of children of all ages. Fall and spring programs (2-4 hours long, ending by 1pm) are held at Boxerwood and at other locations. Staff-led instructional teams work with small groups of children using our thematic curriculum. No prior nature-knowledge needed (we train), but you must have a love of children, learning, and the outdoors, as well as patience, flexibility and good humor. Most team members volunteer one 9am-1pm shift per week, but we are flexible.
Adult Education and Enrichment
Share your talents. We host occasional workshops, seasonal “Walk and Talk” series, and family events open to the general public. Let us know what skills and expertise you would like to share and we will see where you might fit in!
