why volunteer?

Enrich your life by becoming a Boxerwood volunteer. If you love nature and care about protecting the environment, share your time, talent, enthusiasm, and energy in our enchanting woodland setting. Learn new skills as you watch the seasons change; befriend rare trees and shrubs; glimpse butterflies, amphibians, and other wildlife, listen for songbirds, and know you are making a difference. Join the Boxerwood team and help us magnify our impact in the community as an organization dedicated to educating and inspiring people of all ages to care for the Earth, our home.

Volunteer opportunities at Boxerwood are many and varied. We need help with activities both outdoors and in the lodge. Some activities, but not all, require physical dexterity. All volunteers complete an application, background check, and orientation before training with professional staff and/or experienced volunteers. Please review the links below to find your place at Boxerwood.

Welcome visitors to the lodge, share some Boxerwood history, enlist new members, help answer the phone, perform light administrative assignments, and keep the coffee brewing and water stations full when other volunteers are tackling strenuous tasks outdoors. Sign up for a weekly morning or afternoon shift and become part of the Boxerwood team.

Experienced, novice, and beginner gardeners share and sharpen their skills and learn new techniques while working among an extraordinary array of rare and exotic trees and shrubs cohabiting with native gems. Volunteers provide seasonal garden maintenance, remove invasive plants, introduce native species, weed, and maintain paths and wildlife habitat. Some activities require bending and kneeling. Horticulturalist Faith Vosburgh works with the team on Wednesdays between 10 a.m. and 3 p.m. but arrival and departure times are flexible.

Guided Interpretive Tours

Help our visitors discover the rare and exotic trees and shrubs at Boxerwood during peak seasons. Special training will be provided to ensure you are familiar with highlights of the garden and Boxerwood history as well as anecdotes about the physical features of the property and the art that nestles among the vegetation.

Spark the curiosity of children age 2 to 12 by serving as an instructor or chaperone in our nature-based, hands-on education programs. These programs take place throughout the fall and spring at Boxerwood and at other locations. Programs are 2 to 4 hours in length, and end by 1 p.m. You will be part of a staff-led instructional team that works with small groups of children using our thematic curriculum. No prior nature-knowledge needed (we’ll train!), but love of children, learning, and the outdoors is a must—so is patience, flexibility, and good humor! Most of our team members volunteer one 9 a.m.–1 p.m. shift per week, but we’re flexible.

“OWN” a part of the garden

Master and experienced gardeners are invited to explore the grounds with Boxerwood’s horticulturalist to “claim” a discrete area to tend through the seasons. Keep your plot free of weeds and invasive plants and think of new ways to make your site one of the glories of the garden.

Adopt the Play Trail

Our Play Trail is celebrated far and wide as a place where children connect with their imaginations and discover the joy of exploring the natural world. After years of energetic activity, the trail needs attention and regular maintenance, particularly on weekends. Sign up for a morning or afternoon stint tidying up the play trail and helping us keep track of how many visitors enjoy this extraordinary community gem.

Share your talents with the wider community. Boxerwood holds occasional workshops, summer concerts, and lectures for our members and the general public. Let us know what skills and expertise you might want to share with our community some afternoon or evening. We are eager to hear your ideas.

Become the face of Boxerwood by welcoming visitors of all ages and helping ensure that everything flows smoothly at our enchanting public events. Share your thoughts about how we can do things better and/or propose new events and activities you would like to spearhead. Volunteers assist with planning, setting up, parking cars, group activities, encouraging membership, collecting donations, and cleaning up. We are always open to new ideas for how to achieve our mission and vision.

Private and Civic Groups

Is your organization seeking community service opportunities? Why not spend a fun day at Boxerwood tackling weeds that need taming or yanking honeysuckle and ivy that are strangling some of our precious trees? You will all feel better for the team-building activity and experience instant gratification as you help Boxerwood continue to thrive.
