Stewardship Master Plan

Key Projects 2020-2023

1. Restore / Renovate Lodge

As a 68+ year old building of historical significance (under an easement), the Lodge requires renovations to improve its energy efficiency and to maintain its modernist character and appeal.

2. Develop Watershed Management

Watershed management actions aim to limit the pollution (particularly sediment) discharged into the local watershed, and to maintain the health of the Boxerwood pond and wetland.

3. Add Interpretive Sites & a Stewardship Tour

The Stewardship Tour Project will implement a system of interpretive signage at educational “hotspots” around the woodland property.

4. Build an ADA trail

We hope to improve accessibility for all of our visitors.

5. Install Solar Array

Boxerwood hopes to convert fully to solar energy, with a ground-mounted, 36 panel array.

6. Pave Entrance

The entrance is subject to heavy traffic, particularly from school buses that drop off students for education programs, and requires a new surface.

7. Green the Driveway

We hope to convert the old driveway into a “green driveway” which will absorb storm water, absorb less heat from the sun, and create additional green space.

8. Renovate Wetland Walk

A system of creative bridges provides access to the wetlands for educational programs and visitors. It is in need of a full re-build.

9. Update Pavilion

The pavilion serves as an outdoor classroom and as a gathering place for visitors. Enhancements to the pavilion will improve its usability throughout the year.

10. Plant a Pollinator Corridor

The utility right-of-way (power lines) at Boxerwood can be converted into a corridor of pollinator friendly plants, and serve as a model for others to do the same. We envision a regional network of interconnected pollinator corridors.

11. Establish a Biochar System

Biochar systems are known to sequesters carbon and improve soil. It allows organic waste material to be converted into a valuable resource.

12. Landscape Beds, Arborist Care, & Expand Signage

A variety of beds around the gardens will benefit from re-design, new plantings, and way-finding signage to enhance educational opportunities and aesthetics at key locations. Additionally, a number of trees require limb removal and arborist attention.

The Boxerwood Stewardship Master Plan for 2020-2023 highlights key projects planned over the next few years, as funding becomes available.  These projects will help us

1) protect the natural resources of the Boxerwood Woodland Garden,

2) provide a safe and welcoming environment to visitors, and

3) highlight a number of special features with interpretive and interactive components.

We seek funding for these projects through local and regional grants and also welcome contributions from our supporters. You can help with the progression of these plans with a donation at the bottom of this page.
