Thank you to all who submitted the pre-project survey that we sent out over the weekend. The survey gives us a sense of the knowledge and experience we’re bringing to the project – and the story behind our many motivations. Here are some the highlights:
The basics:
There are 103 participating households (including 22 returning households) involving 400+ people from all ages and stages of life.
- Over half (53%) of project households hail from Rockbridge County, with the remainder from Lexington or Buena Vista.
- 66% of households include kids.
- 70% of us who have never composted before wanted to, but haven’t had the tools to do so.
Predictions and motivations:
- When asked how many pounds of waste your household will divert over the course of 10 weeks, most of you predicted about 50 lbs.
- The opportunities to enrich garden soil and to increase earth care actions were both rated as the highest motivating factors for participation. In other words, as a group we are excited to help both our small patches of earth and the big Earth too.
Composting know-how:
- 84% feel pretty sure of the many benefits of composting, with knowledge levels at 4 or 5.
- While most responders reported having a good grasp on how to successfully compost, a sizable number reported a confidence start-level of 3 or below. Stay tuned for tips.
Your survey responses are helping us tailor future blog posts to your needs and interests. We already know we need to explain a bit more why keeping food waste out of the landfill is such a great thing for the Earth. In addition to composting tips, we’ll also share other food waste reduction ideas. Next week: how to create a healthy compost mixture with “greens” and “browns.”
