Eco Speed Dating

Whatever it was, it worked. On May 16 Boxerwood hosted a first-ever Green Career Expo for more than a hundred environmental science students at RCHS. Responding to teacher request, we put out the call. Two dozen conservation professionals showed up, sharing their insights during multiple rounds of outdoor show-and-tell.

Music in the Garden 2022

This year’s summer series gets a jazzy kick-off on Friday, May 27 with Tom Artwick and The Regency Trio, 6:30 p.m. We’ve lined up seven concerts featuring local and regional musicians and a variety of genres and styles.

Partners in the Picture: eco speed dating

This month we’re recognizing by name the 24 conservation professionals who participated in our recent Green Career Expo for high school students. Some partners are seasoned veterans in their fields, some just getting started. Some represented agencies, others local businesses, industries, or organizations.

Partners in the Picture: St. Patrick’s Catholic Church

Folks become inspired to practice earth care for many different reasons: concern for the environment, a desire to give back to the community, love for the natural world, the list goes on. St. Patrick’s Catholic Church reached out to Boxerwood for yet another beautiful reason: to honor the life and legacy of a loved one. This weekend we’re planting a memorial garden with members of St. Patrick’s In honor of the late Mike Yoemans, who served both his church and the community (including Boxerwood) with great dedication.

COREworks Connections

“Working with COREworks this semester reinforced my dedication to be an engaged, environmental citizen,” said the Connecticut native. “The COREworks mission and values showcased to me that my aware, intentional actions can be enough to further environmental progress. While this video did not directly reduce carbon emissions, I hope that it will inspire someone else to reduce and offset their own emissions.”

Boxerwood’s innovative carbon offset marketplace (COREworks) is open for business. Recently we asked several “early adopters” what motivated them to secure COREworks offsets. Natural Bridge residents Wendelin Wagner and Tsony Devroux turned to COREworks to tackle travel dilemmas. An environmental science teacher and a Buddhist retreat teacher respectively, the couple found inspiration in COREworks’ local, regenerative model.

Tending Soil & Soul

How many people does it take to help a camp thrive? Last week 22 young children spent their spring break at Boxerwood, investigating the marvels of the earth beneath our feet in our “Soil Sleuths” camp. Grounded in a kindness curriculum, the five-day camp invited children to explore the wonders of living earth through science, art, reflection, story-telling, and play.

Children Revive Recycling

Fairfield Elementary enjoyed a successful student-run recycling program several years back. Changes in county hauling contracts, however, scuttled those efforts, and schools stopped recycling. This change did not sit well with the school’s fifth graders. With a little help from Boxerwood and a community partner, the students devised a brilliant work-around.

Stepping Up for Boxerwood

With treasured employee, Scott Mason, on medical leave, we needed to find some extra help for maintaining the Garden in its bloomingest season. Turns out it takes multiple new team members to do what Scott does, each with his own particular expertise.

Do Lakes Breathe?

The data the students gathered was confounding. In a Boxerwood-led investigation at Lake Robertson last summer, young scientists from Maury River Middle School used kayaks and probes to discover that water temperature indeed decreased with depth.
