PARTNER IN THE PICTURE – Dominion Energy

Boxerwood is grateful to Dominion Energy for providing funds for purchasing materials for the newly restored Wetland Walk. Dominion provided a $6,750 grant for all the necessary building materials, including locally harvested, locally milled black locust wood.

What makes our programs and our gardens so magical? It’s the people who believe in Boxerwood’s work and give so much to ensure we thrive. We’re sending off two amazing volunteers here at the end of the summer season – our hats are off in gratitude to both Aaron and Kierstyn.

RESTORATIVE WALKS

As a contribution to community well-being, Boxerwood is offering a free series of “Restorative Walks” this fall.

A Better Boxerwood

We recently completed two much-needed Garden restoration projects: we rebuilt the beloved Wetland Walk, and also re-resurfaced our 70 year old driveway.

3,047 & COUNTING

That’s the number of children we look forward to seeing this fall, based on school bookings so far. Some kids we’ll see once, some twice, some many times depending whether they’re part of a day program, an afterschool program, or a family event.

Virginia Tax Credits for BEF

Thank you to everyone for supporting Boxerwood with your gifts and goodwill. As our new fiscal year opens and our Education Appeal is about to launch, we wanted to alert our readership of an annual opportunity to essentially triple your impact with a qualifying gift to the Boxerwood Educational Foundation (BEF). As you may recall, this separate 501(c)3 was created solely to receive and direct donations to support Boxerwood programming with low-income families and schools.

Summer Camp Photos 2022

It’s camp season! This month we’re connecting all sorts of kids (200+) to all sorts of outdoor fun.

Our Spring Circus

Spring is a short, intense program season at Boxerwood. Unlike the longer, more leisurely and docile fall, spring is a sprint, a leap, and a dodge. Sleet, heat, frost, thunder, rainstorms, and SOL testing – we tackle it all. During this year’s 10-week semi-covidy spring season, we’re on track for providing 78 outdoor programs for more than 1,100 children. What’s our secret?

Let’s Go Fly Fishing

In an elegant arc of serendipity, Boxerwood was able to facilitate a first-ever Fly-Fishing Club at Maury River MS this spring. Fly-fishing expert (and MRMS history teacher) Zachary Dishman (pictured above) had a dream of introducing afterschool youth to the challenges and joys of his avocation. Boxerwood, meanwhile, had grant funds for river trips. Together, we tied our fly.

Actual Poems, in Motion

The motion we’re thinking about goes from heart to hand to paper – and sometimes sticks (we’ll get to that). This spring several young children arrived at Boxerwood clutching poems they had spontaneously created for us at home. Many more sent heart-filled letters from school.
