A Week of Programs: A Dozen Snapshots

  • 9/25:20 Maury River MS youths and family members set off on a Saturday afternoon of scientific investigation at Lake Robertson, as part of Boxerwood’s Trail Blazers program.

  • 9/27-28: 30 children from Shenandoah Preschool return to the joys of Boxerwood-based programs, with help from Jess Sullivan, Caroline Coons, and volunteers.

  • 9/28 - 30: 30, 2nd graders from Natural Bridge Elementary consider seasonal changes in the “Adapt or Die” program we provide all local 2nd grade classrooms.

  • 9/28: 15, 5th graders from Mountain View ES meet macro-invertebrates for the first time in their Boxerwood/ South River program, with help from volunteer Morris Trimmer.

  • 9/29: 50, 6th graders from Parry McCluer Middle School participate in a day of activities at Glen Maury Park to learn how our actions on land impact water quality.

  • 9/29: 12, 2nd and 3rd graders from Central Elementary School ride the bus to Boxerwood every Wednesday for our brand new afterschool Bird Club, led by Jess Sullivan and  the Rockbridge Bird Club. The program is without cost to families thanks to grants.

  • 9/29 - 30: 10 afterschool youth in Boxerwood’s  twice-weekly “Forest Makers Club” set to work on creating a tree nursery at MRMS, with help from Elise Sheffield and Scott Mason. The grow-out station will hold 200 native trees potted up by students each year.

  • 9/30: 50, 6th graders and their intrepid teachers from Lylburn Downing MS complete challenges along an annual adventure trek from Waddell to Jordan’s Point along Woods Creek.

  • 10/1: 18, 3rd grade students record “evidence” as part of their “Think Like A Scientist” activity at Boxerwood. The lesson is part of a 4-hour habitat-themed program Boxerwood provides all local 3rd grade classrooms.

  • 10/1, Our Friday afterschool program, PALS, starts another season led by Jess Sullivan and Brittany Klinger. First up: making a new friend for Boxerwood.

  • 10/1: 15 MRMS youth enjoy an afterschool exploration of the Maury River at Jordan’s Point, leaving Boxerwood educator Ginny Johnson to clean the nets.

  • 10/2: Boxerwood provided stream ecology classes for 93 children and parents attending the annual JAKES event along Kerrs Creek. JAKES is an all-volunteer coalition of hunting and fishing entities who encourage local youth to be good stewards of our natural resources.  We loved watching the older youths teach the younger ones how to learn the Boxerwood way. We knew them all!
