blooming where we’re planted

Boxerwood programs take place locally, but the bounty of what we reap and learn keeps finding its way into the wider world.  Thanks to deep collaborations with local schools, Boxerwood is often an incubator for new educational programs that in turn inspire others.

This fall, education director Elise Sheffield was invited to share our innovations via several nationally-promoted venues. In October, she shared details of Boxerwood’s Growing Native tree planting program as part of a webinar series hosted by U.S. NOAA/Bay-Watershed Education Training Program (NOAA-B/WET). Attendees across the mid-Atlantic and beyond reported feeling inspired by the ways Boxerwood integrates hands-on tree planting with our watershed education programming.

In November, we shared our successes with a national grantee cohort of 29 environmental organizations of which Boxerwood is one. This webinar presentation detailed our  2021 summer camp model. Entitled, “How We Built It,” the presentation shared how we created three June 2021 camps that promoted science, literacy and math for under-served schools. The 150 youth and 20 teachers who participated in the camps gave the camp program enthusiastic reviews.

This month a Boxerwood article is also featured on the website of the highly regarded North American Association for Environmental Education (NAAEE). The blog shares tips for peer organizations on how to set up successful Family STEM programs. You can find the blog and accompanying photos HERE.

Boxerwood long ago made a commitment to bloom where we’re planted. We’re so pleased sharing our successes inspires others near and far.
