Our 2024 Chesapeake Bay Club trip was the stuff memories are made of, and the photos say it all. For 26 seventh graders and five adults, the 3-day, 2-night stay on Smith Island in mid-October was a revelation. Thanks to grants and donations, the opportunity was open to all youth from Maury River Middle School and Parry McCluer Middle School, with schools selecting the participants. The students set and collected blue crab pots, explored in marsh muck, found over 100 species in a “sea scrape” of underwater organisms – the most of any student group at the Bay this year – and even had the chance to glimpse a dolphin and the northern lights. As one student put it, “This was the best field trip ever!”
