partner in the picture – Devils Backbone

How about another round of deep heartfelt gratitude for our stalwart partner, Devils Backbone Brewing (DBB) Company! DBB has been a partner for several years now, as the founders Steve and Heidi Crandall are committed to environmental stewardship and passionate about conservation. The company has supported Boxerwood water stewardship and education efforts for a number of years.

In particular, DBB has helped underwrite the Boxerwood Swale System, which “slows the flow” of water across the landscape. This system reduces erosion, limits pollution, and promotes healthy grass and plant growth by capturing and storing rain water in the soil. DBB’s sponsorship has allowed for maintenance and continued improvement of Boxerwood’s Swale System, as well as enhancing our educational programs about water stewardship. DBB’s conservation philosophy aligns directly with Boxerwood’s programming, making us vital partners in protecting local waterways that lead down to the Chesapeake Bay.

In 2017 the DBB Team adopted the Heartland Initiative, “If you’re gonna live in this world we figure you should do your best to take care of it, whether it’s the environment around you, the community you live in, or, in our case, the industry you work in.” And in DBB’s case, they’ve embrace them all, by giving back to their immediate communities through special programs and sponsorships.

Boxerwood, and the community we serve, benefitted especially this year by being the 1st Quarter recipient of the DBB initiative “Seasons of Giving”. Each quarter, DBB chooses a local non-profit to support and designates an item from their menu as the Season of Giving dish. For each dish ordered, DBB donates $2 to the local non-profit. DBB and Boxerwood launched the 1st quarter “Seasons of Giving” during a fun filled evening in January with live Old Time Music and a raffle at the Outpost Tap Room.

The Outpost Team, headed up by the Corporate Social Responsibility Manager, Elizabeth Tual and Tap Room General Manager, E. Danelle “Dizzle” Clark, also initiated hosting Boxerwood Bingo one cold February evening, where much fun and merriment was had by all. Altogether, the events and menu item proceeds raised over $4000 for Boxerwood.

Devils Backbone Brewing Company is an honored partner not only through financial support, but also in practice. The company’s commitment to reducing their environmental footprint by reducing consumption of water in production is one of their 3 year goal initiatives. DBB has also added a rooftop solar array which produces 16% of the production brewery’s electricity. Their commitment to renewable energy, which includes use of a wind turbine, will result in a projected 943,526 pounds LESS CO being dispersed into the environment in 2020.

As Boxerwood moves toward having our own solar array installation and always keeping our watershed conservation practices and education front and center, it is heartening to work with partners like DBB.
