Trailblazers Hiking Club: A New Afterschool Progam

Our culminating adventure is a hike on the Appalachian Trail the first week of November!

By Hannah West, Program Educator

Boxerwood expanded its after school programming by offering a girls’ hiking club for students at Parry McCluer Middle School in Buena Vista. Through this partnership with funder, Rockbridge Area Community Services, we met each Wednesday for six weeks to hike different areas in or close to Buena Vista. We’d gather after school, make a healthy snack, and venture outside.

Our young ladies have thrived and enjoyed being active and outside! If we can find funding (donors welcome!), we would like to continue this project again in the spring.

During our time together we:

  • Hiked the Flood Wall in Buena Vista from their school to Glen Maury Park
  • Did a walking tour of Southern Virginia University’s campus and buildings
  • Learned how to set up a tent and the concept of “leave no trace”
  • Hiked Reservoir Hollow
  • Conquered the “green giant” trail at Glen Maury Park
  • Went on an urban hike which lead us to Ice Slice ice cream shop
…And our culminating adventure is a hike on the Appalachian Trail!
