For the third consecutive year, the James River Association will offer a free Rockbridge training for citizens interested in monitoring the environmental health of the Maury River. The training will take place this Thursday, April 25, 6 – 8 pm at Boxerwood Nature Center (963 Ross Road, Lexington).
The weekly, summer-only program monitors bacteria levels as part of a regional citizen-science effort, James River Watch. The project involves citizens monitoring their local waters from the headwaters all the way to the tidewater.
Volunteers will learn how to gather and test samples from the popular Ben Salem swim spot once a week, sharing the results for the JRA website. Volunteers choose degree of commitment as there is a rotating schedule. Interested adults as well as college and high school students are welcome to participate. All materials supplied.
For more information, interested parties may call Boxerwood (463-2697) or access the program website: https://thejamesriver.org/what-you-can-do/volunteer/water-quality-monitoring/.
