Boxerwood Gardens: Nature Center and Woodland Garden

Second Grade

Adapt or Die

Sept-Oct 2 hours.

Second graders learn a few tricks from nature as they explore animal “adaptation” and “survival” along the paths and ponds at Boxerwood. A game of hide-and-seek will demonstrate how animals use camouflage to trick their predators. At the pond, students will take a quiet moment to observe changes occurring in nature as fall cycles into winter. Then, through movement, they’ll mimic the changes that pond and woodland animals undergo as they prepare for migration, hibernation, dormancy and other forms of adaptation. Our second-grade scientists will also keep a field journal, sketching their day’s observations.

Science SOLs: 2.1: Drawing conclusions from observations; defining conditions that influence a change 2.4: Understanding that plants and animals undergo a series of orderly changes in their life cycles 2.7: Understanding the effect of weather and seasonal changes on growth and behavior of living things (migration, hibernation, camouflage, adaptation, dormancy)

Physical Education SOLs 2.3: Participating in physical activities that promote aerobic capacity, muscular strength, endurance, and flexibility 2.4: Demonstrating cooperative, safe and respectful behavior in physical activity settings
