Community EducationBoxerwood is a "living lab." NEWTS cleans our own waste water and rain gardens filter runoff. As you walk through the garden, there is information about habitats, plants, and animal behaviour. The Welcome Center has reference books, pamphlets on plant care, and birding information. Gardening tips are in each newsletter, on our website, and on our Facebook Discussion Page. Periodic special events include organized tree tours. This year, we have begun a series of Gardeners Workshops. We are also the site for the new Rockbridge Master Naturalist classes.
Watershed issues are a main focus for community outreach programs. We have developed a Rain Garden Initiative and teamed with the City of Lexington and other community groups to produce an informative booklet. In February, landscape workers from August and Bath County even came to Boxerwood for an all-day workshop. We have participated in Woods Creek Restoration Days since its inception. The picture above shows students and adults helping to install a rain garden along Woods Creek.
